Bakersfield, CA

At approximately 11:15 AM, Kern County Fire Department received multiple phone calls for a grass fire along side Highway 99 and the rail tracks. Crews arrived on scene to find multiple fires on both the east and west sides of Highway 99 towards Standard Street.  Crews were faced with multiple exposures and fire crews contacted the rail company to shut down the railroad until the incident has been completed. A small vehicle accident occurred due to possible extreme amounts of smoke over Highway 99 and the Golden State off ramp.

Smoke was an extreme hazard off of Standard Street; fire crews had to don self contained breathing apparatus to protect their lungs. With hundreds of feet of hose lines, crews made an aggressive stop on the fire.

Fire is under investigation.

The Kern County Fire Department would like to advise drivers to slow down on the freeway when visibility is bad due to smoke. Please don't completely stop the flow of traffic and continue safely to your destination. Don't be a part of the incident.
