Structure Fire - Wasco

House fire in Wasco, neighbors report hearing "explosion", then fire coming from back yard of vacant house.

At 6:48 a.m., May 31, Kern County firefighters from Wasco, McFarland, Delano, and Shafter responded to a report of a house fire in the 1500 block of 2nd St. in Wasco, CA.  First arriving firefighters observed a column of smoke coming from the rear of the structure.  Additional equipment was requested (an enhanced alarm) due to the amount of smoke and fire.  The fire had extended to the attic causing additional problems.  Firefighters set to work to contain the fire to the area already involved in the house and to protect surrounding homes.  Hose lines were placed for the attack and the firefighters made their way to the roof to cut a ventilation hole allowing smoke and hot gases to escape.  The fire was knocked down and was contained to the rear of the structure.

The home was vacant at the time and after an initial search an "all clear" was called for any possible people inside.  There were no injuries.  The cause of the fire is suspicious in nature and fire investigators were called to the scene to attempt to determine the cause.
