Just after 1:00 PM this afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a natural gas leak at the intersection of Highway 46 & Scofield Ave. Crews arrived on scene and found that a 6 inch natural gas line had been ruptured by a bulldozer performing ripping operations on a field at the north-east corner of the intersection. Crews isolated the area and notified law enforcement for assistance with traffic in the area. Highway 46 is closed between Magnolia and Wildwood until repairs can be made. A nearby business was evacuated, while Wasco State Prison was asked to shelter in place. Firefighters will remain on scene as a precaution until the leak is controlled.

As of 7:00 pm: Southern California Gas Company has isolated the natural gas leak and Highway 46 is now open. Although Southern California Gas Company will be on scene making repairs, there are no hazards present.

Evacuations: All evacuations have been lifted.

Road Closures: Highway 46 between Magnolia and Wildwood were temporarily closed although, all roads are now open.

Additional Information: The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind the community to call 811 before digging. In addition, when gas lines have been marked by the Utility company, the gas line should be identified visually before using machinery in close proximity.
