River Bottom, West of North Chester, Oildale, CA

Just before 2:00 pm this afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department received multiple calls for a grass fire in the river bottom just west of the North Chester overpass. First arriving crews were faced with approximately 2 acres of grass, brush and trees on fire which prompted the incident commander to request for additional resources. Firefighters swept through the path of the fire to assure there were no homeless persons trapped. Due to heavy fuels, exploding propane canisters and heavy trash accumulation in the encampments, crews focused their efforts on stopping the fire as it burned into lighter grass. Fire crews remained on scene for several hours mopping up hot spots from the fire. The final size of the fire was 10 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation as witnesses on scene provided a description of a male suspect seen in the area starting the fire. There were no reported injuries.
