Just after 5:00 AM this morning, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a structure fire in the 200 block of West Wilson Ave. A second alarm structure response was ordered and responding crews were advised that an adult male may be inside the home attempting to extinguish the fire. The first arriving crew encountered a single-family dwelling that had been converted into a duplex. Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the structure. The firefighter and captain made entry into the home with a hose line to conduct a search for the victim. The victim was located in a bathroom to the rear of the structure. Crews pulled the victim outside where he was given medical treatment by firefighters and ambulance personnel. The victim was transported to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead after his arrival. Fire crews continued to fight the fire and were able to control it in approximately 25 minutes. KCFD Fire Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. The Kern County Coroner responded to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital to retrieve and examine the victim. The American Red Cross and Ridgecrest Salvation Army were called to assist with temporary living accommodations for one adult female and two children.

Additional Information: The home did not have a smoke alarm. The victim is reported to have exited the structure before returning inside to fight the fire. KCFD recommends to have a working smoke alarm and check them monthly. Never re-enter a burning structure once all persons have exited.
