Technical Rescue - Highway 178, in the Kern Canyon

Shortly after 2:30 PM, this afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a person who had fallen while rock climbing in the Kern Canyon. First arriving crews found one patient who had fallen and suffered moderate injuries, but was still suspended over one hundred feet above the roadway. Another climber was above the first, but was in need of assistance to descend. The California Highway Patrol closed Highway 178 to allow for the rescue operation. The injured climber was transported via Hall Ambulance to Kern Medical Center.
