Taft, CA

At approximately 8:22 p.m. the Kern County Fire Department Emergency Communication Center received 911 calls reporting a mobile home on fire. Initial reports indicated that at least one occupant was still inside the home. Firefighters from Kern County Fire station 63 arrived within minutes of being dispatched and found the mobile home completely involved with fire. As the fire was brought under control search operations were conducted to locate the occupant. Sadly during the search efforts the occupant was found deceased. There were no other occupants in the home at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is being investigated by members of the Kern County Fire Department Arson Unit.

In little more than 24 hours, the Kern County Fire Department has responded to two separate home fires with fatalities. Our hearts go out to those who are grieving the loss of loved ones. These tragic emergencies should remind us all to be prepared for fires in the home:

1) Develop & practice a fire escape plan

2) Keep combustible items at least 3 feet away from open            flames and heaters

3) Install and regularly test smoke alarms in the home.
