At approximately 11:30 a.m. today, the Kern County Fire Department received calls for a structure fire in the 400 block of Crystal Court in Bakersfield.  The first arriving units encountered a single family dwelling with smoke and flames showing from the interior. The first engine was met by the home residences and told two adults and 2 children had evacuated, but that several animals were still inside the structure.  Crews aggressively attacked the fire and were able to rescue 2 dogs and 6 cats. 1 cat is unaccounted. The fire spread into the attic space and truck companies had to cut holes in the roof for ventilation to assist with fire attack. The fire was brought under control in about an hour and a half. Due to the quick action of firefighters, no exposures were threatened.  Crews remained on scene for about 2 hours for mop up.    There were no injuries to civilians or fire personnel. Red Cross has been contacted to assist the home owners. The origin of the fire was outside the building but had spread to the interior. The cause is under investigation.

The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind you to check your smoke detectors regularly and replace the batteries every six months.
