 Lost Hills, CA

At 10:49 AM this morning, Kern County firefighters were dispatched to a fire at a large commercial pistachio and almond processing facility to the northwest of Lost Hills.  Firefighters met with personnel at the facility and confirmed that all employees were accounted for and uninjured.  The fire was burning the insulation between an exterior and interior wall.  Smoke filled the structure.  Firefighters searched the interior for occupants and fire extension.  Firefighters were able to contain the fire to a portion of one wall and keep the fire from damaging the the rest of the 83,000 square-foot, $40 million-dollar building.  A specialized “piercing nozzle” was used to puncture holes in the metal exterior wall and deliver water to extinguish the burning insulation.  Thermal imagers were used to locate hidden fire and stubborn hotspots.  Firefighters had the fire under control in approximately one hour after arriving on scene.

The fire was caused by a welding operation.  Damage is estimated to be between $500,000 and $750,000.
