Update: The fire is 100% contained with over 1000 acres burned. All roads are open with no restrictions. 

Update: The fire is currently 55% contained with over 1000 acres burned.  Crews will remain on site over night.

The Fire Department received a call for a grass file in the area of Hudson Ranch Road. And Highway 33 at approximately 11:40 this morning. Kern County Fire dispatched 4 type 6 engines, 2 type 2 engines, 1 helicopter, 1 water tender, 2 bulldozers, 3 crews and 2 battalion chiefs  to the fire. Upon arrival crews were faced with a fire in foot tall grass, approximately 30 acres in size with a moderate rate of spread. High winds caused the fire to jump to the south side of Highway 33 threatening nearby houses. Using aggressive tactics,  crews were able to protect the homes and extinguish the fire on the south side of the road. The  fire is currently contained to the north side of Highway 33. CHP has closed westbound Highway 33 at 166 in Maricopa. Eastbound Highway 33 traffic is currently being escorted by the CHP. The road will be closed for about an hour.  The fire is currently at 500 acres and 40% contained. Fire equipment will remain on scene for a several hours. The fire department asks drivers to stay aware and slow down as fire equipment will be in the area and on the roads.

The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind residents living in high fire hazard areas to make sure they maintain the defensible space around their home
