Just before 8:30 AM this morning, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for an apartment fire in the 6300 block of Summerset Way. The fire was in a first floor unit of a two-story 16-unit apartment building. The fire originated on the stove and was knocked down by the facility manager with a dry chemical fire extinguisher prior to firefighter arrival. Crews pulled the stove outside of the apartment unit and checked for extension of the fire. The apartment units above and beside the fire unit were evacuated as a precaution. The fire did not extend into the walls and additional incoming units were cancelled. The unit suffered approximately $5,000 in damage. The facility manager hopes to have the unit restored today so that the two adults and one child that live in the unit are not displaced. The tenant advised that she had fried potatoes earlier in the morning. She believes she turned off the wrong burner on the stove and the oil in the pan continued to heat, causing the fire. Please use caution when cooking and ensure your appliances are turned off when you leave the kitchen.
