Shortly after 7:00 PM this evening, the Kern County Fire Department received multiple calls for visible smoke and flames from a two story multifamily unit apartment complex on the 2000 block of Kentucky St. First arriving crews discovered flames visible from a second story patio on the west side of the structure and heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof on the east side of the complex. The fire appears to have started on the second story patio and extended into the attic. Fire crews quickly deployed hose lines to attack the fire allowing firefighters to make their way inside the structures to get into the attic to stop the progress of the fire. The fire resulted in 12 units in the apartment complex being damaged. The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation. The Red Cross was on scene to assist the residents that were being displaced from the apartment who did not have family members to stay with.

Additional Information: The Kern County Fire Department urges residents to assure they have working smoke detectors. It is unknown if there were working smoke detectors in the various apartments. Please test your smoke detectors monthly.
