Ridgecrest, CA

At approximately 10:07 a.m. Kern County Fire Department emergency personnel responded to reports of a house on fire. Upon arrival they encountered a single family residence with flames and smoke issuing from multiple sides of the home. Firefighters noticed the family car parked in the driveway and received reports the occupants may be inside. The firefighters immediately advanced a fire hose into the home to search for persons inside while fighting back the fire. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control but sadly one person was found inside and had perished. The cause of the fire is being investigated by members of the Kern County Fire Department Arson Unit. There were no other injuries to civilians or firefighters reported. Special thanks to Ridgecrest Police Department for assisting firefighters on scene with critical information and establishing a clear working area for firefighters.

Community Reminders: 1) Firefighters on scene noted that they did not hear smoke alarms sounding when they entered the home. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. Please install and regularly check the smoke alarms in your home. 2) Initial reports of this fire were not made by calling 9-1-1. During an emergency call 9-1-1, the trained dispatchers have the tools to assign closest and appropriate resources, as well as assisting with identifying where emergencies are located.
