At approximately 2:09 p.m. Kern County Fire Department emergency personnel responded to reports of a house on fire. Upon arrival they found a detached garage on fire to the rear of a property on Lake Street. The garage was completely involved with fire and fire had spread to a residence on an adjacent lot of Kentucky Street. A second alarm was requested to provide enough personnel and equipment to stop the fast spreading fire. Firefighters worked quickly in triple digit weather to contain the fire while conducting searches in all buildings for trapped occupants. When the fire was extinguished the damage could be assessed. The original detached garage and residence at the rear of the Kentucky Street property were destroyed. Two additional structures sustained moderate fire damage and one structure sustained minor fire damage. Due to the coordinated efforts of firefighters five other structures were saved. Firefighters remained on scene for some time afterward to ensure there were no hidden fires in the debris and to assist with salvaging belongings for the home owners. The cause of the fire is being investigated by members of the Kern County Fire Department Arson Unit. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters reported. Four residents were displaced and are receiving assistance from Red Cross and City Serve.

Community Reminder: While responding to this incident emergency personnel had to navigate excessive amounts of traffic. While we are proud of our community’s concern for their neighbors, citizens can best help first responders by yielding to emergency vehicles. Remember, congested roadways slow response times which allows the fire to grow.
