At approximately 10:04 a.m. firefighters from the Kern County Fire Department were dispatched to Kern Oil & Refining Company, for reports of a large fire visible from a distance. Upon arrival firefighters encountered fire issuing from the top of a large metal structure. After speaking with personnel at the facility it was learned that a fire had started within a heating stack during “restart” operations. Refinery personnel informed the firefighters that the fuel to the heater had been shut off. As a precaution firefighters remained on scene as the fire burned itself out. There were no injuries reported to civilians, refinery personnel or fire personnel.
