At 04:16 this morning the Kern County Fire Department received calls for a fire at Virginia Avenue Elementary School [3301 Virginia Ave.] in Bakersfield, CA. First on scene crews were met with heavy smoke and flames on the exterior of the school’s cafeteria with fire also coming from the roof. Though the school is not in session, crews confirmed that there were no occupants inside or injured due to the fire. The first in crew began an aggressive fire attack including sending firefighters to the roof to ventilate. This coordinated attack was able to knock down the fire within 25 minutes of arrival, preventing the fire from spreading to other school buildings. The cause is under investigation. There were no injuries sustained to firefighters or civilians.
