Bakersfield, CA

The Kern County Fire Department received a report of a gas leak at the corner of Olive Drive and Jewetta in Bakersfield around 4:00 p.m. First arriving crews discovered a 6 inch natural gas line had been ruptured by utility work being done in the intersection. Haz Mat 66 modeled the materials involved and the wind direction and was able to determine a evacuation zone based on that information.  Twelve homes were evacuated in the area. All other residence are advised to shelter in place at this time.  Power to homes and businesses in the area has been shut off and will remain off for at least another 5 hour. Nearby schools were also notified of the detour.   Citizens are advised to avoid the area as traffic is currently being diverted.  There are no injuries to report at this time.  This is an ongoing incident.
