Kernville, CA

Just after 1:30 this afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a house fire on Durwood Street in Kernville. The caller indicated that the homeowner might be unable to evacuate the home. When the first crew arrived on scene, they encountered a 1300 square foot home with 50 percent involvement and downed power lines to the rear of the home. Crews made contact with the homeowner who had evacuated and advised that no other people were inside. She advised that she had five dogs that may still be inside. Crews worked quickly to protect and evacuate the neighboring homes on both sides and to locate the missing dogs. Two of the five dogs were located and are uninjured. Full containment of the fire was achieved in approximately one hour. The home is a total loss of $175,000 with an additional $50,000 content loss. The fire was started by an electrical malfunction. The homeowner was using an electric cooking appliance when she heard a popping noise at the breaker. The homeowner and a neighbor were examined by a Liberty Ambulance crew, but denied treatment and transport. The three remaining dogs have yet to be found at the time of this release.
