Just after 1:00 PM this afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a structure fire around the 2600 block of Balsam Ave. Arriving crews arrived on scene to find a fence and wood pile fire impinging onto the nearby structure. The fire lapped up under the eve of the structure and got into the attic, but crews rapidly attacked the fire to keep from extending any further. Crews immediately did a search through the house, the only resident home at the time had been assisted out by a neighbor that was passing by and saw the fire. During the fire fight, crews encountered the resident having a medical emergency for chest pain. One engine company was reassigned to the medical aide and assisted in treatment. The patient was transported to a nearby hospital. Fire crews were able to have the fire under control in 30 minutes, but remained on scene for mop-up.
