Structure Fire - 200 Block of Oak Court, Shafter

Shortly after 1:30 PM, Friday this afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a structure fire in the 200 block of Oak Court. A reinforced structure response was initiated, but cancelled after the initial size-up. First arriving crews encountered a single-family residence with light smoke coming from the roof and the attic vents. The residents had been alerted by a passer by and had exited the structure. Fire crews deployed hose lines to extinguish the fire that was burning roof shingles, rafters and ceiling joists. Some ceiling area was removed to check for fire extension and to remove smoldering insulation. The residents reported that they had been using their fireplace earlier, but investigation found no breach to the chimney flue.  The fire was controlled in less than 10 minutes with minimal damage to the structure and contents.  Loss to the structure and contents was estimated to be $2,000. Crews saved the rest of the residence estimated at $150,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Residents are urged to check and maintain fireplace and chimney screens.
