Passing of Kern County Fire Engineer Brian Massey

It is with deep sadness and regret that we must announce that Kern County Fire Engineer Brian Massey has passed away.  At 8:00 am on Saturday morning, Brian completed a 48-hour shift at Station 22 in Maricopa.  Later that evening, at approximately 10:00 pm, Brian had a significant medical event while at home.   He was transported to a local hospital where he died.  Brian was 56 years old.  His death will be considered a Line of Duty Death.

Fire Department liaisons are in contact with family members and are available to help them in any way they can.  Brian is survived by his three children Brooke, Breanna, and Brandon; his grandchildren Kinidie and Kenzington; girlfriend of 17 years Glenna Seely; Glenna's children Jason, Shannon, Haley; Glenna's grandchildren Nolan and Grady; his brothers Brett and Todd; and his parents Dale and Karen Massey.

Brian started his employment with Kern County Fire Department on May 8, 2007.  He previously was employed by Taft Fire Department where he started his firefighting career in 1990. This sudden loss of Brian is very difficult.  Please keep his family in your prayers.

In recognition of Engineer Massey's service to the community, Fire Chief Brian Marshall has ordered flags at all Kern County Fire Stations to be flown at half-staff until 5:00 pm on the day of Brian's funeral.
