The Kern County Fire Department received a report of a semi truck, parked at the CHP scales on Southbound I-5, leaking an aluminum chloride solution. Crews arrived on scene and confirmed a small leak coming from the trailer. It was unsure if the leak was diesel fuel or a product being transported by the driver. Crews isolated the area and gathered information pertaining to the chemicals being transported in preparation for Haz-Mat 66 to arrive on scene. Haz-Mat crews were able to don the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), make an entry into the contaminated area, while monitoring the air for contaminants and pull samples of the leaking product to confirm the chemicals identity. The Haz-Mat entry team was able to locate the leak and confirm that a tote bin valve had been bumped during transport. Kern County Fire Department Haz-Mat crews worked with Kern County Environmental Health and eventually turned the scene over to them for cleanup.
