At approximately 9:00 p.m. the Kern County Fire Department received reports of a multi-vehicle accident including semi-trucks on fire with the fire spreading to the grass.  Upon arrival, first in crews found a complex of incidents, including: a multi-vehicle accident involving 11 passenger vehicles and one semi-truck, two additional semi-trucks overturned and on fire, and growing grass fires. With the scene of the incident spanning over a half mile of freeway, priority was given to the patients from the vehicle accident and additional resources were started to combat the grass and vehicle fires.  After rapidly assessing the passengers involved in the accident, a total of three patients were transported by ground ambulances with minor injuries within 50 minutes of arrival. The two separate semi-truck fires started three separate grass fires. Coordinating fire attack to the most active flanks, the fires were contained to approximately 5 acres, utilizing hose packs and hand tools. The semi-trucks were carrying non-hazardous cargo, but a minor fuel leak from one of them had to be stopped and the fuel spill contained. Crews will remain on scene mopping up the fires. CHP had reopened multiple lanes of NB I-5 at time of release.
