Arvin,  CA

This evening at approximately 6:23 p.m. the Kern County Fire Department received a call for smoke coming from a single family residence and it was unknown if anyone was home. The first arriving engine company reported that there was smoke coming from the home.  As crews began to search for the location of the fire, they came across two self constructed cottages added on to the primary residence. Crew had a very difficult time making access to the fire due to large amounts of personal belongings hoarded in the area. As crews finally made it to the location of the fire, they had to force entry into one of the rooms, that was added on to the rear of the house, to extinguish the fire and perform a primary search for any occupants that may have still been in the home.  Firefighters were able to get a quick knockdown on the fire and confirm that there was no one home at the time of the fire. Due to the aggressive fire attack, firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the remainder of the house. The cause is under investigation. Loss to the structure was $10,000 with an approximate save of $150,000. There were no working smoke detectors in the rooms that were added on to the house
