Just after 2:15 this afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for methanol leaking from a ruptured line on a rail car at a biodiesel company. KCFD Engine 53 arrived on scene and was met by personnel on site.  There were no injuries and all employees had evacuated and were accounted for.  Firefighters isolated the area around the leaking product.  CHP assisted by closing Millux Road between Interstate 5 and Hill Road.  Environment Health HAZMAT personnel used a drone to fly over the scene and provide live video to firefighters at the Incident Command Post.  No further evacuations were necessary.  Kern County Fire Department’s HAZMAT 66, Environmental Health, and personnel at the facility closely monitored the leak from the 28,000 gallon rail car.  The volatile product was evaporating rapidly due to the hot weather.  This made for easier containment of the liquid product on the ground.  An ambulance was called to the incident and provided a medical standby—no injuries to firefighters or facility personnel.  KC Environmental Health remained on scene to assist in coordinating the cleanup operation.

Assisting Agencies: Environmental Health, Hall Ambulance, CHP
