At 7:22 this morning, the Kern County Fire Department responded to a report of a trash fire behind a shopping center on Calloway Drive. The fire was burning in a trash compactor that was against the exterior wall of Dollar Tree. Additional fire units were dispatched to assist. Firefighters were able to cool the blaze until a loader from the Fire Heavy Equipment Facility pulled the burning container away from the nearby businesses. The shopping center did not sustain any damage from the fire. KCFD crews remained on scene for nearly four hours to completely extinguish the deep-seated fire.
The compactor was filled with cardboard, construction waste, and miscellaneous trash. The fire was caused by tools used to cut apart the waste container. The trash compactor and container have not been in use for an extended period of time and were in the process of being demolished and taken off site.
Additional Information: The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind citizens to be cautious when using power tools that emit sparks.
