Kernville, CA

Just after 8:30 PM last night, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a house on fire in the 16300 block of Sierra Way. The caller also indicated that someone was yelling for help inside the home. When the first crew arrived on scene, they encountered a 1300 square foot home with a detached garage that was 80 percent involved. A bystander advised that a disabled person may be inside. Shortly thereafter, it was confirmed that the disabled person in question had already exited the structure and no other persons were inside. At this time, the fire crews transitioned into a defensive mode and worked to protect the nearby exposures, including homes on each side and a 25 gallon propane tank that was already venting due to the heat. Full containment of the fire was achieved in approximately one hour. The home was a total loss of $150,000 with an additional $85,000 content loss. KCFD Fire Investigators will continue their investigation to determine the cause and origin of the fire, however the use of a portable heater has not been ruled out. The resident advised that he was nearly asleep when he heard explosions at the rear of his home. It is unknown if the home had working smoke alarms. The resident was examined by a Liberty Ambulance crew, but later denied treatment and transport.
