At 1:30 AM this morning, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a garage on fire in the 8100 block of South Kelso Valley Road. Residents were awoken by fuel can explosions from the garage and evacuated their nearby dwellings prior to the arrival of fire crews. When the first crew arrived, they encountered a fully involved garage fire. The fire was also impinging on a mobile home and threatening a travel trailer. Fire crews worked quickly to protect the mobile home and travel trailer and then worked to extinguish the garage fire. Due to limited water in the area, a water shuttle operation was set up, and two Fire Engines and a Water Tender were utilized to retrieve water from a source nearly 20 minutes away. The garage was a total loss of approximately $40,000 in vehicles and equipment. The mobile home suffered an additional $5,000 in exterior and interior damage. Firefighters were able to save approximately $60,000 in property and contents of the mobile home and travel trailer. One adult female was reported to have been living in the mobile home. She was not displaced. The cause is believed to be electrical at this time.
