Ridgecrest, CA

Just after 4:00 AM this morning, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a house on fire in the 200 block of Lilac St. Residents evacuated the home prior to the arrival of fire crews. The first arriving crew encountered smoke and flames visible within the living room of a 1500 square foot single story home. Fire crews deployed hose lines to make an interior attack on the fire and were able to contain the fire to the room of origin in approximately ten minutes. The living room and contents were destroyed. The home also suffered significant smoke damage throughout. Three adults and two children were displaced by the fire. The Salvation Army is assisting with temporary housing. One adult male was evaluated by ambulance personnel for smoke inhalation and a wound to his foot from a nail. He declined further treatment and transport.

Additional Information:  The residents advised that earlier in the evening they had used their living room fireplace for the first time this season. Exact cause has yet to be determined, but KCFD urges residents to use caution when using fireplaces and heating appliances. The home did not have any working smoke alarms. The residents are fortunate to have escaped with little harm. KCFD reminds residents to have working smoke alarms and to test them monthly.

Assisting Agencies:  Salvation Army, Ridgecrest PD, Liberty Ambulance
