THACHAPI, CA

At 12:20 PM, the Kern County Fire Department received multiple calls for a grass fire with multiple starts on the south side of Highline Road, 1/4 mile west of Dennison Road. When crews arrived, the fire was burning approximately 1/4 acre of grass and brush with a moderate rate of spread. Law Enforcement was utilized to shut down traffic on Highline Road while firefighters worked quickly to control the fire. Ground crews were supported by KCFD Helicopter 407, which made three water drops utilizing water from Brite Lake. Crews controlled the fire in approximately 25 minutes, holding it to 1.5 acres.

Evacuations: None - No immediate threat to homes.

Closures: Mountain Valley Airport was closed temporarily while KCFD Helicopter 407 supported the incident.

Assisting Agencies: CHP, Tehachapi PD

Additional Information: Preliminary investigation findings are that the fire was caused by illegal M-80 explosive fireworks. KCFD Fire Investigators are attempting to identify the suspect. Anyone with information on this incident should call 1-877-FIRE-TIP. A reminder that all fireworks (including "Safe & Sane") are illegal in our mountain communities and subject to a $1,500 Administrative Citation.
