Just before 6:30 PM this evening, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for an unknown white crystalized substance in the 5700 block of Fairfax Road. Upon arrival, crews met with the apartment manager who advised that he had discovered a bucket of the substance behind one of the apartment units. Crews isolated the area and advised the tenants of five apartment units to shelter in place. KCFD Haz Mat 66 and Kern County Environmental Health responded to the incident. The Haz Mat Crew made entry to gather a sample of he substance. The substance was tested on scene and determined to be naphthalene, best known as the main ingredient of mothballs. Environmental Health will handle the disposal of the substance.

Crews have cleared the scene.

ROAD CLOSURES: The apartment complex driveway was closed but has been reopened.
