Oildale, CA
Just before 3:45 PM this afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department received multiple calls for a fire in the Kern River Bottom of Oildale, southwest of the Golden State Avenue bridge. First arriving crews encountered a developed fire in brush and trees approximately 1/8 acre in size. The fire grew to approximately 1/4 acre in size before crews were able to contain it. There were no reported injuries.
Meanwhile, callers were able to provide a description of a group of teenage boys that were leaving the area, walking southbound on Golden State Avenue. Arriving KCFD Fire Investigators were able to locate and detain 5 teenage boys (two age 13, and three age 14) that matched this description. The teenagers admitted to lighting the fire with matches and a lighter. Investigators transported one of the 13 year olds to Kern County Juvenile Hall. The other four teenagers were returned to their parents and have been referred to the Juvenile Justice System.
