400 Block of Shafter Avenue, Shafter, CA

Shortly before 1:45 AM this morning, the Kern County Fire Department received a report of a structure fire in the 400 block of Shafter Avenue. First arriving crews discovered a single family residence fully involved in flames and emitting heavy smoke. Two residents escaped the structure with burn injuries prior to firefighter arrival. A power line was down and a gas leak was detected. A reinforced structure response was initiated and personnel set about to tend to the injured, secure utilities and extinguish the fire. The residents were passed to the care of Hall Ambulance and were taken to a local area hospital. A pet dog was discovered, uninjured, and was transported by Kern County Animal Control. The fire was controlled within thirty minutes and fully extinguished in an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but residents reported having difficulty with the evaporative cooler that was operating before the fire.

Additional  Information: The Kern County Fire Department urges residents to service their coolers and air conditioners before the upcoming summer season. A noisy cooler may be an indication of a faulty bearing or motor. It is unknown if there was a working smoke alarm at the residence. Please test your smoke alarms monthly.
