Just after 10:00 A this morning, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a patient trapped by a trench collapse. Reports from fellow workers are that the patient was completely covered in dirt for approximately five minutes. Three coworkers entered the trench prior to firefighter arrival and began digging for the patient. Initial reports were that the patient was unconscious. When the first arriving crew from the KCFD Old River Station arrived, they found that the patient was conscious and complained of pain in his hip and legs. The patient was still trapped in the dirt to just below his chest. Crews used boards to stabilize the trench and minimize secondary collapse. Two firefighters entered the trench with the coworkers and assisted in digging the patient out. The patient was placed on a Stokes basket and a rope system was used to bring the patient up a ladder and out of the trench. The patient was given medical care on scene and transported to Kern Medical Center by a Hall Ambulance crew.
