Structure Fire - 913 Oakwood Street, Tehachapi

Around 5:45 p.m. the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a structure fire in the 900 block of Oakwood Street. The first arriving crew encountered a 1,500 square foot single-family residential home with heavy smoke coming from the garage. Fire crews from Kern County fire station 12 and the new Kern County fire station 13 in Golden Hills quickly deployed hose lines and made an aggressive attack on the fire. Additional fire crews entered the structure and pulled ceiling to check for extension. The fire was controlled in less than 15 minutes with minimal damage. Loss to the structure was estimated at $5,000. Crews saved the rest of the residence estimated at $150,000. Two adults and two cats were displaced by the fire and the American Red Cross was notified to assist with housing. The fire started with the dryer and then extended into the water heater.
