Gas-Line Rupture - 12000 Block of Wible Road, Bakersfield

Current Situation: Just before 7:30 AM, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a ruptured gas line in the area of Houghton Road and Wible Road. First arriving personnel found that a 30" high pressure gas line had been hit by a heavy equipment machine that was working in a field. Fire crews established an exclusion zone of approximately 8 square miles. Upon the arrival of other fire personnel and law enforcement resources, an evacuation was started in that zone. A shelter in place procedure was implemented just outside the exclusion zone and Panama Elementary School was evacuated as a precaution.

Throughout the incident, crews continued to monitor the area utilizing gas detector equipment until the leak was secured by PG&E. Evacuations were rescinded and students were allowed to return to Panama Elementary School. All roads have since been reopened.
