Lebec, CA – On Monday, April 16, 2012 at approximately 8:41 P.M., a call was received by the Kern County Fire Department for a structure fire in the 5500 block of Dennis McCarthy in Lebec, at a two story hotel. Approximately 16 Kern County firefighters responded to the incident. The initial call reported a fire in the enclosed sauna inside of the hotel. Based upon the initial report, a reinforced response was initiated, adding additional resources to address the potential life hazard.  Upon arrival, crews reported a fire inside the sauna room adjacent to the indoor pool area near the 1st floor lobby of the hotel. The first arriving engine company made an investigation of the sauna area and due to the possibility of the fire extending within the walls, the decision was made to start evacuating people from the hotel, which was about 90% occupied. Additional crews arriving on scene started checking for extension of the fire into the walls and ceiling of the pool area. After about 45 minutes customers and staff of the hotel were allowed to return to their rooms after crews had determined the hotel was safe and the fire completely extinguished. Damage was contained to the sauna area and is estimated at about $10,000.00 and firefighters were able to save approximately $6,000,000 in property to the remainder of the hotel. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but appears to be electrical in nature. There were no reported injuries to hotel occupants or firefighters.
