LOST HILLS, CA - Friday March 12th 2010 at approximately 1:11 P.M., a call was received by the Kern County Fire Department, for a cargo vehicle carrying an unknown hazardous material with smoke coming from the rear trailer. The vehicle was traveling North on Interstate 5 approximately 1 mile north of Main Drain. 18 Kern County Firefighters responded to the incident assisted by Kern County Environmental Health Department, CHP and a private ambulance company.

Upon arrival, crews were faced with a large FedEx cargo vehicle with white smoke coming from the rear trailer. Fire crews were able isolate the rear trailer from the main truck. However, firefighters are standing by awaiting the arrival of a hazardous material clean up crew before opening the trailer to expose the chemicals to the environment.

All northbound traffic has been diverted off of the I-5 due to the unknown chemicals on board the vehicle.
