FIREFIGHTER APPRENTICE

The Firefighter Apprentice is the first step in becoming a Firefighter. The Firefighter Apprentice shall be appointed in a temporary status for a period not to exceed 6 months. The Firefighter Apprentice works under close supervision and shall be required to enter into an apprenticeship agreement upon appointment as a Kern County Firefighter Apprentice. Upon successful completion of the Basic Fire Training Academy, the trainee shall be appointed as a probationary Firefighter or be terminated from the apprenticeship program.

Salary: $1,453.93 flat biweekly

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma (or satisfactory completion of G.E.D. test)

FIRE DISPATCHER I

A Fire Dispatch operates under direction of the shift supervisor, to receive emergency and nonemergency telephone and radio calls and dispatch equipment; to operate a computer aided dispatch system; and to do related work as required.

Graduation from high school or successful completion of G.E.D. examination. Minimum typing proficiency of 35 net words per minute.

Knowledge of basic principles and techniques of communications equipment and computer terminal operations; City and County geography, communities, and location of streets and highways; ability to learn the operation of emergency communications equipment and computer-aided dispatch systems; remain calm, act quickly, and exercise good judgment in emergency situations; speak clearly and concisely in a well modulated voice; perform basic mathematics; follow oral and written instructions; develop reports and keep records.

Salary: $3,181 - $3,884 monthly pay range
