This bulletin is to alert business owners there are impersonators utilizing the name ALIK FIRE CONTROL and they are coming to businesses to service fire extinguishers.  These imposters have been using high-pressure sales tactics or deceptive methods to convince businesses to purchase their services.  Watch out for individuals with the following suspicious characteristics:

  • Wear uniforms with patches similar to those worn by Fire Department staff and give the impression that they are from the Fire Department
  • Claim that they are Fire Marshals and are authorized to close the business if not allowed to do an inspection of their fire protection systems and make subsequent repairs.
  • Claim they are there to provide service on extinguishers or hood duct systems that have previously been serviced by another company.


The Kern County Fire Department does not endorse, recommend, or send any fire protection service companies to a local business.  It is up to the business owner to seek those services when needed.

Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a fire protection service company:

  • Be sure that the service technician has proper identification and that he or she is from the company that you selected.
  • Ask the company to verify they have a certificate of Registration and or C-16 License which is valid and current through the California State Fire Marshal's Office and Contractors State License Board.
  • Do not permit a service company to provide service that you did not request or that is not required.
  • Do not pay by cash


We want your business, your employees, and your clients safely protected from fire.  Fire protection systems and fire extinguishers, that are properly installed and serviced, will save lives and protect property.  If you have any questions regarding this matter, or if you require assistance checking the status of a fire protection company, please call the Kern County Fire Department Fire Prevention Unit at (661) 391-3310.

State Responsibility Area (SRA) Lookup

Cal Fire has provided a data viewer to assist landowners in determining if their property may fall within State Responsibility Area (SRA).  SRA boundaries are those adopted by the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection in January, 2011, updated to reflect changes as of July 1, 2016. They are the official boundaries recognized by the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection to define the areas where CAL FIRE has financial responsibility for fire suppression and prevention.

Hazard Reduction Burning on State Responsibility Area Land

The Kern County Fire Department is now opening hazard reduction burning on State Responsibility Area (SRA) land.

A significant change has occurred in the communities of Lebec, Frazier Park, and Pine Mountain Club. The Los Padres National Forest will no longer administer SRA hazard reduction burning in Kern County. The Kern County Fire stations in these communities will serve as the permitting authority for their respective response areas. Permits will be made available to the public during business hours from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. As always, permits shall be provided only to those property owners who meet the clearance and safety requirements.

July 5, 2016Repopulation Effort:  All road closures have been lifted.


The local call center at our EOC will be closed starting today 7-5-16 at noon.  For information updates, please call 211, which is staffed by Information and Referral Services.


The shelter at Kernville Elementary will be closing Thursday 7-7-16 at noon.


We urge residents impacted by the Erskine fire to visit the Local Assistance Center (LAC) to coordinate services and resources available to them.  The LAC is open at Wallace Middle School, 3240 Erskine Creek Rd. from 9:00AM-6:00PM M-F and 9:00AM-4:00PM Sat-Sun. The LAC serves as a one-stop shop for information services on disaster relief; how to replace records lost in the fire, and apply for assistance.  The LAC provides a single place for those affected by the fire to receive information on how to start on the road to recovery.   

State Departments offering services include:  DMV, Contractors State License Board, Department of Insurance, Employment Development Department, and Department of Public Health - Vital Records.  Various County Agencies and other Non-Profit Organizations will also be present.


Employers Affected By The Fire

Employers in Kern County directly affected by the Erskine wildfire may request up to a 60-day extension of time from the EDD, to file their state payroll reports and/or deposit state payroll taxes without penalty or interest. This extension may be granted under Section 1111.5 of the California Unemployment Insurance Code (CUIC). A written request for extension must be received within 60 days from the original delinquent date of the payment or return to file/pay.  Visit the Emergency and Disaster Assistance for Employers page for more information.  If you have any questions, contact our Taxpayer Assistance Center at




Unemployment Insurance Benefits:  The recent Governor’s Emergency Proclamation waives the non-payable, one-week waiting period for Unemployment Insurance (UI) recipients. This means individuals can be paid unemployment benefits for the first week they are unemployed due to the disaster.  Individuals can access UI services, including claim filing, by calling our toll-free number at 1-800-300-5616. For those without reliable internet or phone services, individuals can also receive EDD services, including assistance with their UI claims, at the following nearby America’s Job Centers of California (AJCC).  The management teams at these offices have been advised and are ready to assist individuals impacted by the disaster:

Public Works:  In coordination with Kern Regional Transit, a dedicated “Dial A Ride Service” is available at 1(800)323-2396 for Erskine fire victims to arrange a ride to the Local Assistance Center.  In coordination with Kern County Fire Department and the Kern High School District, the Sikh Friends of Bakersfield are offering free meals to Erskine fire victims, responders, and volunteers at Kern Valley High School from 11 AM to 5 PM daily.


The Kern County Public Works Department has scheduled a special One Day Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Saturday, July 23, 2016 to target and collect the household hazardous waste from affected properties. Residents living in the areas affected by the Erskine Fire, with household hazardous waste items in need of disposal, can stop by Mt. Mesa Park located at 4361 McCray Road from 9AM to 3PM, Saturday, July 23, 2016. For more information or updates visit the website at www.kerncountywaste.com.


Public Health:  Kern County Public Health and the State of California will be offering a debris cleanup assistance program for residences affected by the Erskine Fire. The purpose of this program is to assist in getting your property clean, safe, and ready for rebuild.  As soon as more information is available, residents will be able to sign up for the program. Residents are invited to attend a community meeting to learn about this program on Wednesday July 6th at 6:00pm, at Woodrow Wallace Middle School.


Utilities:  Amerigas Propane wants to encourage customers returning to their homes to call their energy provider prior to turning their system back on, if their system was turned off, or if they have had any interruption of service.  Amerigas Propane will waive the leak check fee for all Amerigas Propane customers in areas affected by the fire.


Donations:  For the most up to date information on where to receive or donate goods, please contact 211.  For a list of donation sites where items are available for distribution please visit our website at www.kerncountyfire.org.

Monetary donations are being encouraged for the local chapter of the Red Cross and for the United Way of Kern County. The following is a link for a fund established through Firefighters First Credit Union / Family Fund. 100% of donations go to support the cause.  Please visit  The Fire Family Foundation for information.  Animal related donations should be directed to Lake Isabella County Animal Shelter at 14891 Hwy 178, Monday-Friday, from 8AM-5PM.  

Do not send donations to the emergency shelters.


Non-monetary donations (non-food) in Bakersfield should be directed to Good Will locations throughout the county between 8AM-5PM. The Elks Lodge at 7608 Wofford Blvd in Wofford Heights, in conjunction with the Salvation Army, is also accepting non-monetary donations.


Non-perishable food donations should be directed to the Lake Isabella Food Pantry at 4621 Lake Isabella Blvd attention Steve or Phillis. Donations here are accepted 24/7.  They need food that can make a meal such as canned chili, canned ravioli, canned soup, hamburger helper, etc.


The purpose of the Kern County Fire Department Ride-Along Program is to foster community involvement, understanding, and education by providing an opportunity for the public and county employees to gain first-hand experience of the duties and responsibilities of Fire Department personnel.


  1. All persons wishing to participate in the Ride-Along Program must be at least 18 years of age and be subject to a background review.
  2. A completed Application for Ride-Along shall be submitted at least two (2) weeks in advance of the preferred ride-along date. Submitting a request does not guarantee approval. Applicants shall be notified in writing if the request is denied.
  3. Approval is determined by any of the following criteria:

a.       Required mandatory continuing education for public service providers

b.       Kern County EMS required educational development of emergency services students

c.       Approved by the Fire Chief

  1. Prior to the approval and scheduling of the Ride-Along,  you will be required to sign the Ride-Along Program Rules, Hold Harmless, and Confidentiality Agreements Participants must have a valid photo ID or current driver’s license with them when reporting for their scheduled ride-along.
  2. Applicants who are currently in the Kern County Fire Department application or pre-employment screening process are NOT eligible.
  3. Date, time, and station preferences shall be accommodated when possible.
  4. Participants shall be limited to one ride-along per year unless otherwise specified by Kern County EMS requirements.



Complete the on-line Application for Ride-Along and review the additional forms that require a signature prior to participation.   After the application has been submitted, our Investigation Bureau will conduct a background check and interview. At that time you will be asked to sign the Ride-Along Program Rules, Hold Harmless, and Confidentiality Agreements. The Ride –Along shall be scheduled no less than two weeks after all of the forms are signed.

Ride–along tours will generally be limited to a two (2) hour minimum, up to a maximum of 12 hours, subject to the discretion of a chief officer or his designee. The hours shall be between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM.

Firefighter duties are inherently dangerous and emergency scenes can be chaotic. Department personnel shall emphasize efforts to ensure the safety of program participants at all times and such efforts require the participants to follow the orders and directions of the Fire Department Officer in Charge (OIC) exactly, and without question.  Upon any concern for the safety of the participant, the OIC shall determine the best course of action which may require the participant be dropped off at a safe location and the Ride-Along be terminated. In such an occurrence, the participant shall be provided clear instructions of the arrangements for them to be picked up and transported to the appropriate location. 

Meal arrangements will be the participant’s responsibility. You should bring enough money for food/drinks, snacks, etc.

Due to questions of “Right to Privacy”, no cameras or tape recorders are allowed during emergency activities. Exceptions may be made for non-emergency working environments but only with specific approval and direction from the OIC.

A criminal record may be cause to have your application denied.

Kern County has thousands of dead and dying trees that are threatening public safety and infrastructure. The County is taking action to work towards mitigating hazardous dead trees in the following ways:   

•    On April 5, 2016 the Board of Supervisors proclaimed a Local State of Emergency due to pervasive tree mortality. 
•    On October 30, 2015 Governor Brown issued a State of Emergency proclamation.  This proclamation recognizes and addresses the need for the removal of dead and dying trees throughout the State.
Tree Mortality Task Force

The Kern County Tree Mortality Task Force was assembled to develop a response plan for removing dead and dying hazard trees. The goal of the Task Force is to collaborate with local, as well as private, and public partners to identify and remove dead and dying trees which threaten public safety and infrastructure (power lines, water systems, roads/highways, communication lines, etc.). County staff continue to work towards mitigating the threat of dead and dying trees with our partners. The first step is to identify and prioritize areas where dead trees need to be removed to protect public infrastructure.

Supervisor Scrivner and the Kern County Fire Department are members of the Governor's Tree Mortality Task Force. This task force meets on a monthly basis and provides a forum for coordination and information sharing among local, state, federal, private and non-profit agencies in an effort to ensure public safety and continuity of essential services from the threat of tree mortality across the State of California.

Tree Mortality Coordination Efforts

There are a number of tree removal efforts taking place in Kern County and these will continue as new dead trees are identified and funding is obtained. Below is an outline of the various projects to remove trees around Kern County.

•    State Responsibility Area Fire Prevention Fund grants were secured in 2015 for Bear Valley Springs, the Frazier Mt. Park area, and the Alpine Forest Park area.  These projects will utilize both private contractors and Kern County Fire Department personnel. 
•    Utility companies have been removing a large number of trees that threaten their infrastructure, especially in Bear Valley Springs and Alta Sierra.
•    Cal Trans has removed trees along State highways such as Highway 155 near Greenhorn Summit.
•    Private landowners have hired contractors to remove many dead trees that threaten their homes.

Kern County will continue to apply for additional grants to remove dead trees and treat other hazardous fuels.  These projects, which can cost thousands of dollars per acre, can be prohibitively expensive for landowners.  Landowners who wish to have trees removed or fuels treated through one of these grants will be required to sign a Right-of-Entry form that’s limits the liability of the County of Kern and it’s contractors. 

Private landowners can also get financial assistance to remove trees and replant through the California Forest Improvement Program (CFIP) or the Natural Resources Conservation Service.  

Landowners in the State designated tree mortality zone who wish to have trees removed (conifers only) or fuels treated through one of these grants will be required to sign a Right-of-Entry form that’s limits the liability of the County of Kern and it’s contractors.
